Joseph Webster II (Portrait)

Maria Green

Joseph Webster II married Maria Green in 1832. They settled in West Flamborough and there produced sixteen children in the space of twenty-one years. Maria was born September 16, 1812 in Greensville, Wentworth Ontario, and died September 9, 1866. Below is a copy of their wedding certificate, witnessed by two "Greens", presumably Maria's parents.

Joseph II established the Ashbourne Roller Mill on the family property now known as Websters Falls in 1830, and added to it in 1845 when he also built the still standing stone family home. Joseph's portrait was painted from the photograph (below) in about 1880.

Joseph Webster II is said to have been born in Gloucestershire but there does not appear to be any surviving record of this event. His mother was Margaret (surname unknown) and the common belief has always been that his father was Joseph Webster I. After nearly 15 years of investigation I am faced with a number of references which make a different conclusion more feasible.

I believe that Joseph Webster II was actually the Grandson of Joseph Webster I, and that his father was James Webster, a son of Joseph Webster I. His mother, to whom James may or may not have been married, was abandoned by James and discovered years later by Joseph I, by which time she had been married to and separated again from a Mr. Allen, and was living in very poor circumstances.

Joseph I (Grandfather) took the child from his Mother, now Mrs. Allen, believing it seems that he was not being properly cared for, and subsequently settled with him in Canada. In about 1831, the two Josephs were visited in Canada by James, and Joseph II learned for the first time about the desertion of his mother by James. A violent argument ensued after which both Josephs returned to England where Joseph II sought out his mother and brought her back to Canada. Joseph I remained in Britain. Joseph II installed her in a house in Dundas, Ontario where she lived for many years. The census of 1861 shows Margaret Allen living in King St., Dundas with her granddaughter Jane.

Joseph Webster II died July 5, 1886.
